A book buyer's notes.

I have worked for over nineteen years as a book-buyer for an independent bookshop. This means that a lot of my work involves seeing 'Reps' from all the major UK publishers with their lists of titles that will be published in the next several months. They all come visiting to try to get some of my valuable shelf space to display their 'lead titles', their 'middle lists' and the all important 'back lists' of books that I like to keep in stock. Over the years I have noticed how more and more local authors and first time self-publishers have approached me to take their books. I hate it when I have to reject a book. How do I tell a budding author that I am sorry but the book they are offering me just doesn't have a place in our shop because it fails on one account or another. Often it will be because there has been no promotion of the book and none is planned, as the author is too busy. A book has no chance of selling without it receiving some sort of publicity. Unless the writer/self-publisher is going to drum up some interest in their book it will never sell on its cover alone! It is for this reason that our company, The Printed Word Bookshop, has compiled a resource for new writers called 'Write Your Way To Freedom'
Though I say it myself, this is a useful package. Not only do you get

give a terrific insight into the world of books and publishing for the
listener or reader.
Having written your book, you will then need to get it printed, published
and distributed into bookshops.
All of this can be very daunting for a first time author. This unique
CD gives you so much help and certainly clears away a lot of the “don't
know what to do” questions.
